Eight Values of Free Expression

Individual Self-Fulfillment

Freedom of speech allows individuals to express themselves, helping them shape their own identity and potentially connect with like-minded people. When someone forms their identity through their values and beliefs and expresses these through speech, this expression often intersects with political values or basic rights. Freedom of speech, therefore, is not merely a political right—it is a vital human necessity.  By doing so, it makes a human's identity souly on there own beliefs and wisdom.

A current example of this that effected me was what happened to Charlie Kirk.  On September 10th, 2025, a famous conservative political activist was hosting a debate at Utah Valley University, open for free speech.  Charlie Kirk himself believed in the importance of people having free speech and sharing there ideologies.  He believed the best way to encourage dialogue was through open debates on college campuses and large events. During his speech, he was tragically assassinated on film Infront of hundreds of students.  His goal was to inspire students to voice their opinions and support their beliefs,

while also allowing them to challenge his views.

Aside from Charlie Kirk doing in person meet up's, Kirk has used social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to build a culture of free thinking, where anyone can express their opinions.  He actually is the founder of a organization called "Turning Point USA" were the objective is to push conservative ideology's, but also to be a free thinker and be able to speak your mind civilly.  His public persona centers on encouraging individuals to explore and express their identities through open dialogue.  I think that Charlies moment, while I might disagree on somethings, was generally positive and only wanted to help people. The violence he faced was disgraceful and unjustifiable, as it targeted someone exercising their fundamental right to free speech.

This example of Charlie Kirk underscores the importance of individual self-fulfillment through self-expression and freedom of speech. His ideas aligns with Baker’s argument that self-fulfillment requires active participation and expression from individuals, empowering us to speak out.

~AI disclosure: I used Microsoft Co-Piolet to help gather ideas and information on my topic. I then edited the text and added photos/links. I used many of my own thoughts and options.
